Toenail infections are caused by fungus that grow in and around the toenails. This is not only unsightly to look at it, but the infection can spread and cause many other problems.
This can be especially bad for people who already have serious illnesses. That is why it is important that a person get toenail infection treatment right away.
If a person does not want to see a doctor, he or she should try some home remedies to treat the infection. Vinegar is a product that most people have in their homes and has been shown to help slow down the growth of bacteria. Vicks vapo rub is also a product that helps slow down the growth of bacteria in the toenail.
If a person finds that home remedies fail to relieve a person of his or her toenail fungus, it is time to see a physician. A physician will present the patient with a variety of treatment options. One of those treatment options is taking an oral medication that will help clear up the infection.
The doctor may also prescribe a topical medication along with the oral medication. If the person has a severe infection and/or does not respond to any of the treatments, the doctor may have to perform surgery as a last resort. Surgery involves removing the entire nail and the patient may have to wait an entire year for a new to grow in its place.
Fortunately, just like many other health conditions toenail infections can be prevented with a few simple lifestyle adjustments. Keeping the nails clean, cut, and dry will go a long way in keeping them healthy and preventing them from becoming infected. It is also important that a person never walk barefoot in public places because they are a breeding ground for toenail infections. Additionally, wearing appropriate socks will also keep fungus from growing in the toenail.
